Deaf Sensitivity Reading Services
What is Sensitivity Reading?
Sensitivity reading is the review of written content by someone with lived experience as a member of a marginalized group. This may include experiences related to disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, race, religion, or culture. The goal is to ensure authenticity, accuracy, respect, and inclusive representation.
What is Deaf Sensitivity Reading?
Deaf sensitivity reading is a specialized type of sensitivity reading conducted by someone who is Deaf. It involves reviewing written content that includes Deaf or Hard of Hearing characters to ensure respectful and accurate representation. This includes:
- analyzing correct presentation of Sign language written into books,
- identifying ableist language,
- evaluating how Deaf identity is portrayed, and
- reviewing communication styles.
Deaf characters are often depicted in harmful or stereotypical ways, which can lead to misunderstanding and mistreatment of the Deaf community. Deaf sensitivity readers provide essential guidance to help portray Deaf characters with authenticity and to eliminate offensive or inaccurate depictions.
